About this episode

Christoph Gerber has proven with Talon. One that German founders can indeed create global Enterprise SaaS successes. With over 100 million euros in funding and customers like H&M, Adidas, and Ticketmaster, his company has become a leading player in customer engagement and loyalty. In this conversation, he shares his most important learnings from the journey from initial idea to international market leader.

From MVP to Enterprise Solution: The First Crucial Months

Talon. One developed its first MVP in just 6-9 months – an impressive speed for enterprise software. Christoph's approach was deliberately different from many other startups: Instead of focusing on specific use cases, the team decided on unopinionated software development.

"We wanted to create a platform flexible enough to serve different use cases without committing too early to a specific direction," Christoph explains. This decision proved to be spot-on, as it enabled Talon. One to quickly respond to various customer needs and position itself as a versatile solution.

Leadership Reimagined: Why Less is Sometimes More

One of the most interesting insights from Christoph's leadership journey is his decision to have no direct reports. This deliberate structuring allows him to focus on the strategic aspects of the company while experienced leaders handle operational areas.

In team building, Christoph deliberately focuses on experienced employees rather than pure junior power. "Senior employees not only bring expertise but can also better guide juniors and build the company more sustainably," he emphasizes. This philosophy is reflected throughout the company culture, which is oriented toward sustainability and long-term success.

Fundraising Without a Traditional Board: An Unconventional Approach

Talon. One operates without a traditional board – an unusual structure for a company of this size. Christoph has deliberately focused on fair terms for all stakeholders, both investors and employees. His experience reveals clear differences between German and US investors.

"German investors are often more cautious and need more time for decisions, while US investors act faster but also negotiate harder," Christoph describes the different mentalities. For European SaaS companies, he still sees great opportunities, especially when they keep the international market in view from the beginning.

Work-Life Balance: From "Work Hard, Play Hard" to Sustainable Success

One of the most striking changes in Christoph's leadership philosophy is his understanding of work-life balance. While his time at Lieferando was still shaped by the "Work Hard, Play Hard" principle, sustainability now takes center stage.

"8 hours of focused work is more productive than 12 hours of pure presence," is Christoph's clear conviction. Family and leisure time have a significantly higher priority for him today. This attitude also transfers to the entire company culture at Talon. One, where burnout prevention and sustainable working methods are highly valued.

German vs. International Markets: Different Speeds

Software sales show clear differences between German and international markets. German customers are often more hesitant to adopt new enterprise software, while US customers are quicker to test and implement innovative solutions.

"In Germany, decision processes take longer, but customers are often more loyal once they've made a decision," Christoph observes. This insight was important for Talon. One's international expansion and adapting sales strategies to different markets.

The Future: AI Bubble and Defensibility

Christoph has a pragmatic view on the current AI discussion. He sees many "AI wrappers" without real defensibility and warns against the current overvaluation of many AI startups. For established companies like Talon. One, however, AI offers real opportunities to improve existing products and develop new features.

His advice to other founders: "Focus on real customer value, not the latest hype. Sustainable companies emerge by solving real problems, not by following trends."
