You Don't Need a Recording Studio, You Just Need Courage! (Interview with Sascha Boampong)
About this episode
Sascha Boampong lives between two worlds: He works part-time as an emergency response coordinator, while spending the other half of his day already living the digital nomad dream. His podcast "Der Digitale Nomaden Podcast" (The Digital Nomads Podcast), which he runs together with Timo Eckhardt, recently hit the impressive milestone of 700,000 listeners.
From Emergency Response Coordinator to Successful Podcaster
How does a regular employee become a successful podcaster? Sascha's journey began with personal challenges. A breakup became a turning point for his personal development and opened his eyes to new possibilities. This is also where he met his co-host Timo – a stroke of luck that laid the foundation for their joint success.
Interestingly, "Der Digitale Nomaden Podcast" has served as inspiration for other formats. For instance, it influenced the creation of "JUP" (presumably another podcast). This networking shows how the podcast community inspires and drives each other forward.
How a Podcast Changes Your Life
The podcast opened up completely new opportunities for Sascha. He made valuable contacts, found new friends and like-minded people. The format gave him access to a network that would never have existed without the podcast.
Although Sascha and Timo aren't living as full digital nomads yet, they're on a similar path toward that goal. The podcast serves as a bridge between their current life and their future dreams.
The Golden Rule: Be Your Own Target Audience
A central success factor of their podcast is authenticity. Sascha recommends: "Be your own target audience." Instead of spending fortunes on books and seminars, you should simply talk about what interests and moves you personally. This approach feels natural and automatically attracts people with similar interests.
Why Now Is the Perfect Time
Many people hesitate to start a podcast due to unfounded fear of rejection. Sascha debunks this myth: The fear is usually completely unjustified. Instead, you should use the "matchstick effect" – simply light the first match and see what happens.
Podcasts have a decisive advantage over other media: Listeners' attention span is significantly higher than, for example, with YouTube videos. People often listen to podcasts while doing other activities and give them their attention for extended periods.
What You Need to Get Started
The technical barriers are minimal. You don't need a professional recording studio – courage and willingness to begin are completely sufficient. "You already don't have a podcast," Sascha puts the situation in perspective. So it can't get worse than not starting at all.
It's particularly helpful to find someone who drives you and holds you accountable. A partner or mentor who "kicks your ass" when motivation wanes can make the crucial difference.
Authenticity as a Recipe for Success
Sascha's most important message is: "Ding Dong – just be authentic!" Artificiality and pretense don't work in the long term. Listeners quickly notice whether someone is genuine or playing a role.
His observation about "fear of success" is also interesting – many people sabotage themselves because they unconsciously fear being successful. Recognizing and overcoming this psychological barrier is often the first step to breakthrough.
Filling Life with More Life
Sascha's closing words perfectly capture his philosophy: "It's not about giving life more years, but giving the years more life." A podcast can contribute exactly to that – creating new experiences, connecting people, and enriching one's own life.
