Burnout Risk at 21? How I Recognized the Warning Signs and Took Action

About this episode

Burnout at 21? What sounds like a cliché became bitter reality for me two weeks ago. I had lost interest in everything – as you could easily tell from the missing new podcast episodes.

The Realization: I'm Heading Straight for a Wall

It's a strange feeling when you suddenly realize you've driven yourself to the brink of exhaustion. For me, this realization didn't come like a bolt from the blue, but crept up slowly. The enthusiasm for projects that usually drove me was gone. The energy for new podcast episodes? Vanished.

The insidious thing about burnout is that it often comes gradually. You think you're just tired or stressed – until you realize it's more than that. For me, it was the complete lack of motivation that made me pay attention. As a founder and podcaster, you normally live off the energy and drive for your projects. When that disappears, it's a clear warning signal.

Why Does This Happen at 21?

Many would say: "At 21? You should have all the energy in the world!" But that's often exactly the problem. At a young age, you think you're invulnerable. You work late into the night, start one project after another, and ignore your body's signals.

As a young founder, you're under particular pressure. You want to prove that despite your age, you can be taken seriously. You want quick success, want to show what you're made of. In doing so, you easily overlook that even a 21-year-old body and mind have limits.

The Measures: What I Concretely Changed

Once I recognized I was heading for a wall, I had to act. Standing still wasn't an option, but continuing as before wasn't either. The challenge was developing strategies that don't just provide short-term relief, but ensure my long-term well-being.

This isn't about radical changes overnight. Burnout prevention is a process that takes time and, above all, requires honesty with yourself. You have to be willing to question cherished habits and sometimes say "no" – to others, but especially to yourself.

Long-term Strategies for Better Well-being

The most important insight for me was: sustainability beats short-term peak performance. As a founder, you tend to think in sprints – but entrepreneurship is a marathon, not a sprint.

That's why I started establishing structures that support me long-term. It's about creating a system that works even when energy levels are lower. This also means you don't have to give 120% every day to be successful.

What Other Founders Can Learn From This

My experience shows: burnout can affect anyone, even at 21. The good news is that you can recognize the warning signs and take countermeasures in time. The key is being honest with yourself and acting early, before you completely burn out.

For other young founders, I hope my story serves as a wake-up call: your age doesn't protect you from exhaustion. On the contrary, the pressure to be young and successful can be an additional burden.

The break in podcast episodes wasn't planned, but it was necessary. Sometimes you have to take a step back to be able to take two steps forward. I learned this lesson at 21 – better early than never.
